Matt Szollosi, a 1997 graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law, is a Partner with Cosme, D' Angelo & Szollosi Co., L.P .A. a law firm in downtown Toledo, where he practices labor and construction law. The four-term city councilman, who was the highest vote-getter in the 2001, 2003 and 2005 Oregon city elections, will be running in a district with a sizable Democratic lean.
Currently in his fifth year as the city's Economic Development & Planning Committee Chairman, Szollosi has placed tremendous emphasis on gathering public input, as evidenced by his more than sixty (60) public committee meetings over the past four years. Szollosi-led bi-partisan efforts to overhaul the city's antiquated sign code and establish heightened building standards for new commercial construction. Through his committee, the city's comprehensive master plan update will be completed by mid 2006. Szollosi, who describes himself as "fiscally conservative," drafted Oregon's "Best Bid" policy to ensure industry standards for excellence are met on taxpayer-funded construction projects. The councilman's family has deep roots in the district. His wife Melanie L. Szollosi (Czubek), and her family are from Point Place. Their daughter, Audrey Mae Szollosi, was born on July 12, 2005. Fritz Szollosi, his grandfather, served as the Postmaster and as a Lucas County Commissioner. His grandfather, John Babarcsik, is a retired member of the UA W, having worked at the Powertrain facility for close to thirty (30) years. Both of his parents, Francis M. Szollosi and Emma J. Oravecz (formerly Emma J. Szollosi) are public school educators, and served on Oregon City Council. His brother, Francis J. Szollosi, has been elected twice to serve on the Toledo City Council, and sits on the State Democratic Party Executive Committee.
